In the last three weeks we, 20 German students and 2 teachers from Heimschule St. Landolin in Ettenheim (Germany), visited the United States for an exchange with Newton High School, in Newton (New Jersey). We spent two of the three weeks in host famlies of students from Newton High School. The other week we travelled to Washington DC and New York city.

20191024_205954_0.jpgAt school, we observed a lot of differences between the German and the American school system: In America, the schedule is repeated daily while ours repeats itself every week. Also, some of the subjects we do not have in Germany, e.g. florals, photography, future farmers of America, cooking… a lot of them would actually be extracurricular activities and not normal subjects in Germany.

Before we went to America we obviously had some expectations but what surprised us most was that some people do not seem to care much about the climate change (also, they waste a lot of plastic and electricity) because in Germany the „Fridays for future“ movement (initiated by Greta Thunberg from Sweden) is a very big thing at the moment and everybody is talking about it. Here, some of the students have heard about it but nobody does anything to avoid global warming. After staying in our host families for a week we noticed a lot of positive aspects, for example the friendliness of our host families, the team spirit and the sense of belonging together at school. Also, the strong feeling of a real community at school was very impressive (e.g. at the football game). Further, the people here are so nice and always smiling.

We went on a trip to Washington DC and later to New York City to go sight seeing and to get to know more about the American culture and history. We visited a lot of places, for example the Capitol, the National Archieves, the Library of Congress, several memorials and other monuments. In New York we went up the Empire State Building and the Rockefeller Center and enjoyed a wonderful view. We also did things like watching a play at Ford’s Theater, visiting Ellis Island, seeing a Basketball match at Madison Square garden, or having a meal at Ellen’s Stardust Diner. Our teachers did a really good job in planning this week and we all had a lot of fun even if we walked so much every day.

All in all we can say this exchange was a huge success. Not only did we improve our language skills and saw a lot of nice places, we also learned about American culture and history, grew with new challenges, became more open minded, and made new friends. We can only recommend everybody to be part of this exchange program and now we are all excited for the Americans to come over to Germany next year.
